Hazrat Maulana Mohammad Ilyas Sahab Rh.
    (Founder of Tablighi Jama'at)
Hazrat Maulana Mohammad Ilyas was born at Kandhla town of Muzaffarnagar in 1303-Hijri. His original name (According to Hijri Calander) is Ilyas Akhtar, and his Father's name is Maulana Mohammad Ismail from "Jhinjana" who has three sons. The eldest of them Maulana Mohammad was born to his first wife. His elder brother was Maulana Mohammad Yahya, (Father of Shaikhul Hadith Maulana Zakariya) and he himself was youngest. He stayed in early childhood with paternal grandparents and with his father at Nizamuddin. This family from "Kandhla" was supposed to be the most pious. Not only  the piousness of male members of the family and the stories of their other religious activities were beyond the imagination of discouraged people of that time, but also that of their women's. His family was amongst those whose educational, religious, spiritual and social services caused the country earn the fames. This family belongs to "Siddiqi Shaikh" . His father Maulana Mohammad Ismail originally was from "Jhinjana" town but after the second marriage with Maulana Ziya-ul-Hasan's daughter he resided permanently at "kandhla".
Like other children of the family his primary education started from elementary school and learnt 1¼ part (Parah) of Holy Qura'an by heart in it. He completed Hifz-e-Qura'an (complete memorization of holy Qura'an by heart), and elementary books of Persian and Arabic languages before his father and some of that before Maulana Doctor Mohammad Abrar at Nizamuddin. Due to busy Schedule of his father he along with elder brother Maulana Mohammad Yahya, already studying at "Gangoh", went there to study before Maulana Rasheed Ahmad from "Gangoh". Gangoh then was the centre of pious and learned people. He adopted the sprituality and piousness in company with Maulana Rasheed Ahmad. He went to Deoband in 1326-Hijri to attend the class of Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmoodul-Hasan and studie "Bukhari and Tirmidhi" before him. From the very beginning some glimpses of qualities of the companions of the prophet and curiosity about Islam was quite visible in his practical life.
Shaikhul-Hind used to say that whenever he looked at Maulana Ilyas, the image of the companions of the prophet would come into his mind.
He was appointed as a teacher in "Mazahirul uloom" Saharanpur in the month of "Shawwal"1328-Hijri. He performed pilgrimage with Hazrat Shaikhul-Hind and Hazrat from Saharanupur in 1332-Hijri. His brother Maulana Yahya and the elder brother Maulana Mohammad who lived at Nizamuddin after the demise of their father, died on "10th Zee-Qadh' and 25th "Rabiul-thani" 1334 Hijri respectively.
Migration to Nizamuddin and beginning of preaching and propagation in "Mewat"
After his elder brother Maulana Mohammad passed away, on the insistence of his lovers and the followers and to tread in his father's footsteps, he migrated to Nizamuddin. The "Mev" Caste of Mewat region was about to apostatize and were Muslims in man only because of continuous and prolonged ignorance of Muslims and their unawareness about Islam. He had closed terms with the people of 'Mewat' because of his father Maulana Mohammad Ismail. His father and elder brother Maulana Mohammad had always worked hard to educate the people of 'Mewat' and hance they accomodated students from 'Mewat' and taught, them. His concept of eliminating the people of 'Mewat' was only to spread religious education among them and bring them out of ignorance. Establishing religious institution in 'Mewat' was the only way to fulfill this view. His intention was to approach each person of Mewat not only some special class. No sooner he returned from the pilgrimage than he started preaching (meeting the people to tell them about Islam) in 1345-Hijri, and then joined other people with him to preach, first of all, the basic principles of Islam (Kalima-e-Tawhid) and Namaz) among the people. It was very typical to work there at the beginning but slowly the hard work yielded and the environment changed devotees would insist him to visit 'Mewat' and he agreed provided they assure him of establishing a 'Maktab' (Primary school) in the area but they kept mum. After some days one of his devotee thougt that first he should at least visit them and then would see what happens because it was not so easy for the people of 'Mewat' to free their children from the cultivation and hand them over some books and work in'Mewat'. So he went there and visited people and asked the devotees to fulfill his promised of estabilishing  'Maktab'. After much effort they agreed to open a 'Maktab' and henceforth so many religious institutions were estatblished in 'Mewat'. He managed to establish ten, 'Makaatib' in his first visit. He said to the people of 'Mewat' " you give me students and I shall arrange salaries of the teachers". A short span of time passed and hundreds of 'Makatibs' came into existence which provide students with Qura'nic, religious and urdu education.
Expantions of work:
As the preaching work started in 'Mewat' step by step it got fame in near by areas Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur and the congregations (team of preaching) started working in these regions. The work kept on spreading its wings. Hence, the preaching work reached the remote areas like, Peshawar and Sindh in his life time. He was pretty happay to see the expantion of the work but was much concerned about its accuracy. He went on instructing his associates in this regard.
His health condition was not good since the starting of the work. Besides this hard work, concern about the Muslim Ummat, frequent visit, lack of caution in food and rest, worsened his conditions causing the failure of body system. He suffered from intestinal infection and fell sick that he was supported by two men to go to prayers.
Maulana Yousuf was given charges to head the congregation work in consultation with Maulana Abdul Qadir from Raipur and Hazrat Shaikhul-Hadith.

One night he suffered from nervous crises and called Maulana Mohammad Yousuf and Maulana Ikramul-Hasan, the same night and said to them, "Come and hug me I am leaving". At last he left the world on  21th  "Rajab"1363-Hijri
